(Not So) Top Secret Inugami Sports Day Post

Hey guys! Since I got mostly enthusiastic response (yay!), I'm making this post so we can all discuss without playing telephone.

My PM, in case you need a refresher or are new to the conversation:

Every second Monday in October (the 12th this year) is Health And Sports Day in Japan, basically a public holiday promoting fitness and an active lifestyle that involves things like sports festivals and track and field days at schools and in communities. It includes both sports and races and other fun games like the three legged race, tug-of-war, obstacle courses, etc.

I had the idea today (a week away, I know) to have a mini-sports festival for Inugami as well! Basically a mingle log that would start with short demonstrations for clubs (just something written up, you wouldn't have to RP it) about what the club is about and then the mingle would have "stations" set up so people could RP their characters running a three legged race together or playing tug of war against each other or a 1-on-1 game of basketball or whatever. Nothing too formal (no brackets or anything, just prompts for RPing).

ICly it would be for club recruitment but also to somewhat subtly (or not so subtly) advertise the ways people have to defend and train themselves for fighting back against attacking native students/running the heck away from monsters. And for a bit of fun since everyone could use some.

I wanted to gauge interest in this from club heads before bringing it up to the larger OOC body on the OOC comm, so if you think you (or other people in your club) would be interested in something like this, please get back with me! I do know it's only two days after new arrivals, so we can also play with moving the date around (I just said the 12th since it is the holiday, but Inugami is Weird and we can be weird too). If a lot of people are interested but would rather wait for November when there won't be new arrivals, we can work with that too, I just wanted to see if anyone would be interested at all!

So from the responses I got back, the main concern from everyone was timing. I got one vote for November but most people seemed concerned about doing a mingle log two days after intro, so as I see it that's the biggest thing to decide at the moment. Options as I see them:

• The mods have offered to let us have it in place of the normal mingle intro on the 10th, but we would need to put it together quickly and make sure it's newbie accessible!


• Have it the 12th (2 days after newbie intros, but on the actual holiday in Japan)


• Have it later in the month (there's a call for an event around the 21st and a Halloween party on the 31st so we won't want to go over those) - I might suggest just later that same week, like around the 14th or 16th


• Have it in November

Other things to work out include the stations and demos. I'll include stuff about that in some subcomments.

on the monthly mod post, they're requesting for a small player-run mini-event... maybe this could be that? if there hasn't been talks of one already

I thought about suggesting that too... I told Nika that it's probably a no on doing it in place of the intro log since we're still planning and I'm going to be traveling tonight/at a wedding tomorrow so it'll be hard for me to get things put together in time (rest of the month shouldn't be as difficult). I can ask her if anyone's asked for that spot, though.

Word from the mods is that they want that space to have a 3 day event, so our event wouldn't really work for that. They suggested doing it after that, perhaps on or around the 25th.

Demos

So this will be a demonstration for your club - it's just something you can write up, and it can be as detailed or as straight forward as you want. Feel free to grab other club members if they want to help! I was thinking for organizational purposes that these could be in frozen comments in the log or posted somewhere else with links in the top post just so we don't end up with an overwhelming text wall in the OP and people can just check out the ones they care about.

Basically, it's what your club is doing to entice new members to the club; showing off their fighting moves, giving a speech, whatever. As I said, you can write a whole thing out or just do a quick description, just something to give players/characters an idea of what you're about!

No matter when we end up doing this it's good to get a head start on this now.

Activities

AKA the prompts for people to RP. We want these to be pretty simple and stuff that would make for good CR building.

Here's some things I've thought about, feel free to add more ideas!

- Three legged races
- Tug-of-war
- 1-on-1 basketball
- Other basketball games (horse?)
- Volleyball?

There's usually races and obstacle courses on these days but those aren't really fun to RP (though we can certainly offer it). If clubs want to have little booths or whatever that's fine too.

Potentially capture the flag might be fun, it's something Sterlyn (our local Inaho) and I had considered before. Or something like a scavenger hunt; maybe people can get the items listed from participating in other activities or watching demos or such and we could just have a list of where the things come from. Though what'd work for a prize I'm not sure...

Also which parts of the school will activities be hosted in? That'd help us figure out activities we might add on.

Thaaaaat's a good question. Gym is an obvious choice for activities. A scavenger hunt could help teach new students about the layout of the school too (information that could save your life presented in a fun way?) if we're doing this on/around intros of course. They could always start out in the auditorium for demos, or those could be in the gym too.

I'd think we would probably stick mostly to those areas (other than locations for the scavenger hunt if we do that) and the courtyard (might be good for capture the flag/obstacle course) since they can all hold a lot of people.

Those make sense to me, and they seem like good areas since they're open and provide a lot of space for people to mill around. Maybe those demos could be held in the gym?

i like the idea of scavenger hunt! i recently read this shoujo that put a neat spin on that, too — instead of looking for items, the players had to look for PEOPLE that fit the descriptions! it might be a neat way to include characters who aren't even part of the teams.

That could be really fun, especially since it's good for characters to get to know each other and such things as who has medical experience and such. Nice for familiarizing.

I like this idea too and in the OOC post I'll definitely have sign-ups for people to volunteer their characters as "answers."

Arm wrestling booths! I think that would be a good idea, for the newbies to initiate a friendly challenge to any member of the sports club. Not sure what the prize will be, but it's something to consider.

Oh, that's a neat idea! If anyone has any ideas for prizes then shout them out, I'll be thinking too.

Prizes are clearly pretty limited in terms of basic goods available, but maybe the cooking clubs could offer specially cooked meals for them? I mean, given the food in the cafeteria!

this is kind of a kitschy idea but what about prizes like a date for an evening or a "slave" for a day? lfmsklaj just trying to think of ways others could get involved... 8|a

That seems like it could be fun to tinker with. Maybe people from various clubs could volunteer...

Or the club leaders themselves could do that.

I'm going to say no to this just because I'm worried it will add an unneeded level of complexity, because first we'll have to gather volunteers to be dates, and then actually pick winners (which I wanted to avoid doing), and then make sure they get their "date."

I understand the desire to get more CR going but I think we'd benefit more from making sure there's lots to do in the mingle log itself than try to set up dates as prizes. I also think if there's going to be prizes at all they should be small things that can be given out based on general participation (candy, sweets, stickers, etc) - it's a little "everybody gets a gold star" but it's a lot easier to set up OOCly and I feel like fits in with the spirit of the event more than setting up dates or slaves for specific winners.

nah that makes sense! it'd definitely be way more complicated than it needs to be, and there's already so much logistical planning to do with the event itself, so you're right

Saitou will let people challenge him or set up mock duels for the kendo club, and also the setting up of the event and keeping an eye out for the safety of the students as well!
